Building Civil Society Capacity for Poverty Reduction

A collaborative project of Huron University College and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM)

The project aims to build the capacity of UDSM to develop stronger connections with civil society organizations (CSOs) in order to support and encourage their participation in policy making and monitoring processes for poverty reduction.

Tanzania is a bilingual Swahili and English country and in Swahili, the project name Haki Shiriki Katika Sera means the right to participate in policy. This right is recognized in the poverty reduction strategy of Tanzania. To fulfill this role and make an effective contribution, civil society must be able to analyze strategies and policies, access and share information and conduct policy dialogues. Some ways this project will support civil society in achieving this:

Strengthen curriculum and programming at UDSM on civil society and poverty reduction for students and CSOs.
Develop relevant and accessible information resources and services to support all aspects of the project
Encourage collaboration between the university and civil society organizations through outreach activities such as skills training, workshops and conferences.
Facilitate policy dialogues

This project is funded by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) under the University Partnerships in Cooperation and Development Tier 2 program
