The Catharine Ridley National Scholarship

The members of the Huron Community - alumni, friends, faculty and staff - are saddened by the passing of Miss Catharine Ridley, Huron's distinguished Registrar from 1961 - 1991, who passed away on Wednesday, January 5, 2011. Huron will always be grateful to Miss Ridley for everything she did for the College and its students and alumni. She believed strongly in the opportunities which Huron offered and the possibilities in life for each of the students whom it was her pleasure and privilege to know.
Miss Ridley served the College and its students with great distinction. One of the enduring joys of Catharine's life was the immense pride she took in Huron students both while they studied at the College and later as alumni. All students admitted to Huron were special to her and she remembered every student's name. Catharine has said, on many occasions of Huron alumni, "I am so proud of them - they have all done so well."
In 1991, Catharine was made an Honorary Fellow of Huron. She was also honoured in 2003 with a portrait unveiled in Huron's Great Hall in appreciation of her many years of dedicated service.
We invite you to share any memories and stories of Catharine and what she meant in your life and that of the College community. Please email Ken Andrews at kandrews@huron.uwo.ca with your memories and stories, or mail them to Ken at the address indicated below. We'll post memories of Catharine received from alumni and friends on the Huron website and include memories in the 2011 Huron print newsletter as well.

The Catherine Ridley National Scholarship was established in 1987 on the occasion of Miss Ridley's 25th anniversary as Registrar by alumni and friends of the College. In appreciation of Miss Ridley's life and service to the Huron community, you may wish, at the family's invitation, to make a gift in her memory. Your gift will help ensure Miss Ridley's scholarship continues to provide opportunities for Huron students now and in the future.
The Catharine Ridley National Scholarship is awarded to an incoming first-year Huron student who is a Canadian citizen or landed immigrant and has achieved a mid-term average in their final year of secondary school of 90% or higher. Applicants are assessed on the basis of academic achievement, volunteer / community service, commitment to the arts or athletics, and involvement in student life. The scholarship has a value of $5,000 and is renewable for three years, based on the student maintaining an average of 80% or better, for a total potential value of $20,000.

Although she retired almost 20 years ago, Catharine's heart and mind remained with Huron. She remained as dedicated to Huron's alumni and friends as when she was Registrar, and she was grateful as well for the opportunities to be associated with the remarkable community of Huron alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students which she herself served with such great distinction.
