The Collegiate Chapel of St. John the Evangelist is a beautiful building in its simplicity. Built in the early 1950's to replace a building that had been built in the 1860's , the chapel is collegiate in style (the pews face one another, like a choir in a monastary) with one central window of Christ seated in Majesty, the rest of the chapel windows being coloured glass which bathes the church in natural light. St. John's is an intimate setting for many rites of passage and services in people's lives. The Chapel can seat up to 140 persons (with some chairs at the back) including the balcony, and is equipped with a Casavant Organ which was also built in the early 1950's and rebuilt in 2006.
There are a number of Orthodox icons present in the chapel, most notable of which is a handpainted 19th Century Russian Icon of the Most Holy Trinity. The Doors of the Chapel are guarded by the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, and in the smaller space for prayer intentions, the Blessed Virgin, St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist keep their watch. These aids to devotion are used by all those who gather in the chapel, either for regular worship, or for private devotion. There are also simple stations of the cross, handmade of purpleheart which line the chapel, drawing the eye toward the Altar. The Tabernacle (place of reservation of the Blessed Sacrament) is in the Southeast Corner of the Sanctuary.
The chapel is always available for prayer or meditation, or if you are looking to join with the Worshipping Community, there are ample times for prayer and celebration. The Faculty of Theology holds Daily Prayer on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday at 12:30, The Eucharist is celebrated at that same time if it is a Saint's day or Holy day. The Faculty of Theology Community Mass is on Thursdays at 11:30 am. The pinnacle of worship life is of course Sunday Mass, held at 11:00 am in the Chapel. At any given time the Chapel Community will have members of numerous denominations present - Anglican, Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Presbyterian and United Churches to name a small number. Seekers are also welcome, now being the time in your life to ask really big questions. Maybe all you want to do is come and listen. Our doors are as open as our minds. All are welcome.
