For Xiao Lin, coming to Huron University College meant joining a community. After looking through the Viewbook, Lin observed that while you have the amenities of Western at your doorstep, Huron offered a unique atmosphere. “That’s what attracted me here: the opportunity to be part of a smaller community and really, have an impact in that smaller community, as well.”

Now entering his 5th and final year, Lin is pursuing Psychology at Huron and his HBA at Ivey. While this is a challenging option, the rewards are beginning to present themselves to this multifaceted student. With 8 or more courses per term, “The increased puts you under pressure to perform all the time, but it was really rewarding seeing that I could deal with more work than I thought I could.” Much of this is due to the personalized attention available to students at Huron. “Profs are very willing to just take some time out of their day. Because it is such a small community they are able to help everyone.”

Especially useful in the discussion-based teaching encountered at Ivey is the educational foundation Lin received at Huron along with the lessons learned from peers. “At Huron, I learned a lot of things about being able to meet new people and learn from people. At Ivey, we’re constantly talking about cases with fellow students.” He comments further that, “Just having that past experience of meeting people, especially in a small community where it’s easy to do so really helped me prepare for Ivey.”

In spite of this, Lin found that the move from high school to university to be nerve-racking. His trepidation was quickly laid to rest after quickly meeting friendly Sophs and fellow 1st years during Orientation Week. This positive experience paved the way for Lin and in his 2nd year, he became a Soph and worked as a Residence Don during his 3rd and 4th years. “I enjoyed that experience and wanted to give back and really show students here everyone’s a little bit nervous at first, but everyone’s got the same intentions: we all want to have fun and learn. Having that small community really makes you feel comfortable.”
