Drew Nutbrown
For Drew Nutbrown, now in his 3rd year of university and a Residence Don, Huron really was the best of both worlds. Compounded by an interesting family connection and the decision was made. “I decided to go to Huron because it was relatively close to my hometown. But,” he adds “my mom went to Western and she took a few classes at Huron. She realized there were benefits to being at a small college but still reap the benefits of being at The University of Western Ontario, as well. That’s why she guided me to Huron and I’ve liked it ever since. My mom convinced me to go.”
Although he has always had an interest in history, philosophy was, for Drew, a departure. “I didn’t have any philosophy courses at my high school, so it was very different type of course from anything I had ever taken,” he comments. “I love talking about difficult issues along with a lot of critical thinking.”
For Drew, stimulating coursework is combined with approachable instructors. “In my later years I’ve found that since I’ve already taken courses with certain professors and I’ve already formed a relationship with them.” An additional benefit to Huron’s learning environment is the interconnected library system. “There are independent academic resources at Huron, as well as resources at Western, so you have access to both which is beneficial.”
Now in the second half of his university career, Drew highlights that a positive experience at university relies on involvement. His advice? Get involved in any club that interests you. “You’ll meet people who have similar interests and that are the whole point of university: meet people who have different opinions and have that intellectual, exciting experience.” A corollary piece of advice is “to focus on studying, as well, because that’s the main reason why you’re here.”
The benefits of affiliate life are not lost on this 3rd year student. “My favourite thing about being a Huron student is belonging to Huron and Western; you have access to everything.”
